Middle English truþ
from Old English triewð or treowð "faith, faithfulness, fidelity, loyalty; veracity, quality of being true; pledge, covenant"
from Proto-Germanic treuwaz "characterized by good faith"

"Sooth is an old word for truth, or reality, fact. If you look up its etymology, you will find that a soothsayer is one who speaks the truth. I thought it pertinent to mention, though neither truth-tellers nor soothsayers have anything to do with the news."
