vatic

circa 1600, "pertaining to a prophet"

from Sanskrit Vaṭ (वट्) "to tell, to speak, to surround"
from Latin vates "sooth-sayer, prophet, seer"

vatic adjective
  • prophetic, oracular

“My writing teacher told us that as writers, we had to tap into our “vatic state” — a foggy but generative state of mind. The exercise instructed us to not do anything at all for at least four hours. WE could not look at our phones or read, but walks were permitted. We were told to keep a notebook with us and note any stray thoughts during this time, but we couldn’t write. It was a way of recreating the dreamlike condition while we were awake. In these lumina states, our waxy subconscious congeals and assumes form.”
