progress

from Latin progressio, progressionis "forward movement, climax, rising figure of speech"

pro "about, for, in front of/instead of" + gress, from gradior, gradi, gressus "walk, step, take steps, go"

progress noun
  • a going on
    • a going on for the sake of going on; a meaningless word in its own right, having no positive connotation whatsoever; for example: a going on towards an abyss can be called progress, simply for being a sequence of steps
  • a: a royal journey marked by pomp and pageant; a state procession
b: a tour or circuit made by an official (such as a judge)
c: an expedition, journey, or march through a region
  • forward or onward movement (as to an objective or to a goal); advance
  • gradual betterment

The last definition of progress is a later addition. Initially, progress was primarily "a state journey by royalty".
