"stages of spiritual progress of the bodhisattva, or one who, though capable of enlightenment, delays their buddhahood in order to work for the salvation of others"

The bhūmi stages (also termed vihāras, stations) appear as 7, 10, and 13 in various texts, but the scheme that is most commonly agreed upon is the one given in the Daśabhūmika-sūtra ("The Sūtra on the Ten Spiritual Levels"). It lists the progressively superior stages as:
  1. Pramudita, the Very Joyous
    • in which one rejoices at realizing a partial aspect of the truth
    • with the thought that, having begun the career of a bodhisattva, he will attain enlightenment and will help others
  2. Vimala, the Stainless
    • in which one is free from all defilement
    • free from impurities
  3. Prabhakari, the Luminous
    • with the noble doctrine
    • luminous
  4. Archishmati, the Radiant
    • in which the radiant flame of wisdom burns away earthly desires
    • the rays of their virtue consuming evil passions and ignorance
  5. Sudurjaya, the Difficult to Cultivate
    • in which one surmounts the illusions of darkness, or ignorance as the Middle Way
    • hard to conquer
  6. Abhimukhi, the Manifest
    • in which supreme wisdom begins to manifest
    • both transmigration and nirvana
  7. Duramgama, the Far-going
    • in which one rises above the states of the Two vehicles
    • far-going
  8. Achala, the Immovable
    • in which one dwells firmly in the truth of the Middle Way and cannot be perturbed by anything
    • immovable
  9. Sadhumati, the Good Intelligence
    • in which one preaches the Law freely and without restriction
    • good-minded
  10. Dharmamegha, the Cloud of Doctrine
    • in which one benefits all sentient beings with the Law (Dharma), just as a cloud sends down rain impartially on all things
    • showered with “clouds of dharma,” or universal truth
