truth

Middle English truþ
from Old English triewð or treowð "faith, faithfulness, fidelity, loyalty; veracity, quality of being true; pledge, covenant"

from Proto-Germanic treuwaz "characterized by good faith"

truth noun
  • that what is, without any filter, distortion or exaggeration; lucidity
  • all the facts about something, rather than things that are imagined or invented
  • something that is believed to be true
  • often capitalized: a transcendent fundamental or spiritual reality
  • in particle physics: truth quark, later called top quark
a type of quark with a mass of c. 176 to 199 GeV/c2, a positive charge 2⁄3 that of an electron, zero charm, and zero strangeness

"Sooth is an old word for truth, or reality, fact. If you look up its etymology, you will find that a soothsayer is one who speaks the truth. I thought it pertinent to mention, though neither truth-tellers nor soothsayers have anything to do with the news."
