fetich

1610s, fatisso "material object regarded with awe as having mysterious powers or being the representative of a deity that may be worshipped through it"

here included as a possible relative of fetch

fetich noun
also: fetish
  • an object, either natural or artificial, capable of being appropriated by an individual whose possession of it procures the services of a spirit lodged within it
    • Chamber's Twentieth Century Dictionary
  • something which is believed to possess, contain, or cause spiritual or magical powers; an amulet or a talisman
  • sexual attraction to or arousal at something abnormally sexual or nonsexual, such as an object or a nonsexual part of the body
    • all sexual definitions are a later addition (after 1897)

Today's (primarily sexual) understanding of the word is the result of a classic artificum distortion. The most effective concealment is the one which obfuscates (something) by sprinkling new associations atop, thus drowning the previous knowledge.
