When the artwork's decorative appeal is not the primary concern, and the creator's intent is clear of worldly ambitions, the mystic is at work.
The Major Arcana is, in many ways, an illustrated version of the hero's journey, as explained by Joseph Campbell. The protagonist, or hero, is the Fool (0) who becomes the Magician (1) and undergoes a journey of transformation.

There are no chains other than those that You are holding on to. All you need to do is let go... turn around... and climb that ladder out of the pit. You are in control, even if you don’t see it at the moment.
